Whistle Blowers !! Can we ..??
"Under U.S. law, a whistle blower (or whistleblower) is an employee who "tells" on an employer, because he or she reasonably believed that the employer committed an illegal act."
The topic is at most importance, as we just saw the court verdict regarding the Manjunath Shanmugham case
The murder of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) sales officer Manjunath, an IIM (Lucknow) pass-out, had shocked the entire country over a year ago. On November 20, 2005, Manjunath's body was recovered from an area under the Maholi police station of Sitapur, a neighboring district of Lakhimpur Kheri where he was posted.
Considered to be an upright and honest officer, Manjunath was on a mission to check adulteration of diesel and petrol with kerosene in his area, his colleagues had.
His only fault was that he refused to overlook the rampant adulteration of fuel. A year later investigations are complete, Manjunath's parents and friends are still waiting for justice.
In the rising India, where the economy is progressing in a very rapid face and the people especially the youth are slowly raising the voice against the social inequalities, corruption and other social issue's, the Manjunath case is of very much important. The threat from the people of whom the person complains is just really high in India because of the impact of political power, money, muscle power etc of the authorities. The whistle blower in most cases will be a layman who cant help to protect himself from such people or powers. This is the main reason why many among us are not willing to raise the voice against the higher officials who have committed an illegal act.
The sections of beurocracy, police etc are so weak such that it will bend before money and power at instances and justice and values are ignored completely. In a country where the the law is really volatile enough to make any innocent a criminal or a whistle blower > the criminal,
In a country where nothing flies above money and power, in country where corruption is fledged in the nukes and corners of all sections and in fact the life styles of people, in country where the citizens are just considered as mere vote banks by the rulers. What is the solution to protect those who raise the voice?
Its high time now to think about this seriously. Many countries like US,Australia etc have got laws to protect whistle blowers. We also need to start working for that. The most important is not the presence of a mere law, but the real protection of Whistle Blowers. The law/methiod should also be good enough to take care of those "False Whistler's" intended for creating trouble for others also, because its more important >> "No innocent should be punished even if a 1000 criminals escape"
